A Day in the Life: What Running a Small Gift Shop Looks Like

When people think of running a small shop, they often picture dreamy shelves of beautiful products, cute packaging, and leisurely coffee breaks in between. And sure, there are moments like that—but there’s also admin, supplier emails, packing marathons, and days when the post office queue feels like a full-time job!

So here’s an honest look at what really happens in a typical day at Benny and Mollie. No day will be the same, but this gives you an idea.

A Calm(ish) Early Start

The coffee machine goes on, the to-do list is in hand, and if I’m lucky, I can sneak in 10 minutes with a cuppa before the day kicks off properly. realistically, my coffee goes where I go. This is when I check overnight orders and messages from customers.

Top priority? Making sure everyone who placed an order feels seen and appreciated.

Packing Orders

This is one of my favourite parts of the day. I light a candle, put on a podcast or playlist, and start wrapping up orders with all the love and care in the world.

I use eco-friendly packaging wherever possible, and always include a little thank you note in every order. It’s the little touches that count.

Emails, Suppliers and Planning

Next up: admin. Replying to messages, chasing up stock from local makers, planning new product launches, and updating the website. I also spend a bit of time on social media—posting and designing, sharing new arrivals, and chatting with our lovely community.

A Quick Break

Lunch is usually something quick (and eaten while on the move!), but I always try to get outside for a short walk if I can I do have three Greyhounds so they do give me the motivation for this. A bit of fresh air works wonders for creative thinking.

Content and Creative Time

This is when I write blog posts (like this one!), take product photos, or style up new arrivals for the shop. I might shoot a reel, brainstorm a new bundle, or start prepping for an upcoming seasonal collection.

It’s one of the best bits of the job—bringing the heart and story of the shop to life.

Post Office Run

I gather the day’s parcels and pop down to the post office. Yes, I queue like everyone else. Yes, the postie knows me by name. And yes, I absolutely beam every time I send someone’s parcel off into the world.

Reflect and Reset

Evenings often include a bit more admin, prepping for the next day, or uploading new products to the shop. But I try to wind down with a bit of reading or a slow dinner. Running a business can be full-on, but finding balance is everything.

Final Thought:

Benny and Mollie isn’t just a shop—it’s a little world full of heart, hustle and handmade charm. Every product you see has a story, and every order is packed with genuine joy and gratitude.

So next time you order from a small business like ours, know this: your support makes this kind of day possible. And we wouldn’t trade it for anything.
