Candle Care Tips for the Best Burn and Longevity

Candle Care Tips for the Best Burn and Longevity

Candles are more than just a source of light or fragrance; they create a warm, inviting atmosphere in your home. Proper care is essential to enjoy your candles safely and maximise their burn time. Here are some simple tips to help you get the most out of your candles.

1. Burn in 3-4 Hour Intervals

For the best results, burn your candle for no more than 3-4 hours at a time. Burning for longer periods can cause the wick to overheat, leading to uneven burns or excessive soot. After 4 hours, allow the candle to cool and re-solidify before relighting.

2. Trim the Wick Before Each Use

Before lighting your candle, check the wick. If it’s longer than ¼ inch, trim it down using a wick trimmer or sharp scissors. A trimmed wick helps prevent:

  • Carbon build-up or “mushrooming” at the wick’s tip.
  • Excessive soot.
  • Unruly flames that can burn unevenly or cause smoke.

If you notice mushrooming after a burn, trim the wick before relighting for a cleaner, longer-lasting burn.

3. Choose the Right Surface

Place your candle on a flat, heat-proof surface before lighting it. This helps prevent uneven melting and keeps the candle stable. Avoid draughty areas, as gusts of air can make the flame flicker, leading to uneven burns and soot.

4. Extinguish Safely

When it’s time to put out your candle, always use a candle snuffer. Blowing out the flame can cause wax to splatter or create smoke. A snuffer extinguishes the flame gently and safely.

5. Monitor Wax Levels

Discontinue use when only ½ inch of wax remains at the bottom of the container. Burning a candle below this point can overheat the jar and pose a safety risk.

6. Keep It Safe

  • Always burn candles out of reach of children and pets.
  • Never leave a lit candle unattended.
  • Keep candles away from flammable objects like curtains or paper.

7. Allow Wax to Pool Evenly

On the first burn, let the wax melt across the entire surface to the edges of the container. This prevents “tunnelling,” where wax remains on the sides of the jar, reducing the candle’s burn time.

8. Store Your Candles Properly

Keep your candles in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight or heat sources. This prevents discolouration or melting.

By following these simple candle care tips, you’ll enjoy a cleaner, longer-lasting burn and keep your home safe. Proper care not only protects your candle investment but also enhances the overall experience, making every burn as delightful as the first.

Happy burning! 🌟
